Day #6: News

Ok, Corbin's mom here again today with our vet visit results. Sorry I waited so long to update, I wanted to make sure we received the results of his blood work. We re-tested him for pancreatitis, which came back negative. So now we can start treating him for the pain, which we think is coming from a pinched nerve in his back. We'll start treatment with Prednisone on Sunday morning, we need to have the metacam that he's been on for anti inflammatory out of his system for at least 48 hours.

Now, as most of you know, Corbin is a very active guy, even in the pain he's in, its hard for us to keep him from jumping on the couch when he hears a noise outside. So, in order for this to work the quickest, we'll need to tranquillize him during his treatment. If we keep him quiet, we can hopefully have this fixed in a week, but if he keeps pinching that nerve it'll set us back. It'll be hard to see him doped up every day, but we want him pain free as quickly as possible. We also have a ramp set up to help him up and down our deck stairs to avoid him repinching that nerve.

If he doesn't seem to respond to the prednisone treatment, we'll need to see a neurologist and have an MRI done. Hopefully this works and we can avoid that. But we'll do whatever we need to do our big guy!

I can't thank everyone enough for your love, concern, support and suggestions... hopefully we're at the bottom of his issue and he'll be writing about his crazy antics soon!

Corbin's momma, Jenn

  5. Hey Corbin.
Wow, I'm so glad the dogtor knows what's going wrong now so you can start getting better. Just think of this as a nice, relaxing vacation and let those meds work on you. My healing vibes just keep flowing right to you. Please take good care of yourself during all of this.

  6. YAY!! I bet it feels good to have a diganosis that makes sense and seems treatable. A few days of loopiness are worth it for many years of pain free living! I am happy for you all and will continue to keep all fingers and paws crossed for that good looking dog:)

  7. OKAY... now this is better news!! Whew.
I am just gonna think of this as... Corbin is havin a late winter... HIBERNATION TIME.. Everybuddy could just a bit of that.. RIGHT??? Rest is a GOOOOOD thingy and this will be FINE. THE RAMP is a grrreat Idea... We have one so that we can get from our Safe Fenced area... up onto our Front Porch. We LOVE it. Dad put Carpet on it so we can.. get a grip!!! hehehe
Now when I told my mom about the Pinched thingy.. she said to tell you that our Angel Sarek (one of the short hairs).. had that once.. and the Other Vet we Used to have... wanted to do surgery and stuffs.. butt she said NO.. give this medicine ONE MORE week to see how it goes... He had already been on it fur a week... THAT Vet didn't like he saying that.. BUTT HE finally caved and at the end of the SECOND week... Sarek was FINE for the entire rest of his life. SOOOOOOO mom says.... give Corbin a chance to heal. I'll bet he is FINE as Frog Fur in no time.
PLEASE keep us posted... we are ALL very VERY worried about our buddy.

  8. Dude! Glad they know what's up with you. I had a pinched nerve in my neck and I would cry out in the most pitiful way. I got steroids and muscle relaxers and they did the trick in a couple of weeks, but when my pain returned about a month later, I got acupuncture and herbs which has really, really helped. Mom did a postie about it. I'll send you the link.

And yeah, Gizmo was a bit cracker. When he got the bone cancer one of the big risks is that a doggie can fracture the bone where the tumor is, so he was pretty "mellow" after his diagnosis - chemically induced...

  11. Howdy Everybuddy, well that is good news. At least you know what is happening now. Its a very good idea to give him some relaxing medicine to slow him down. After reading about Corbin's adventures we think he is either sleeping or running flat out hehe. All paws crossed here for our studly mate. Get well soon and hugs to Corbin and his mum and dad. No worries, and love, Stella and Rory

  13. Thank you for the news. I hope Corbin is having some good dreams while he is on"medication" and that he gets better very very soon. I get some "medication" from my Mommy sometimes for my itching and sometimes I wake up and its a different day, but man did I have some good dreams. Get well Corbin and I hope you find out who pinched you so you can bite them when you are better,

  14. One of our dogs had a pinched nerve in his neck years ago. He cried pitifully all night long and could barely move in the daytime. So, we know how hard this is on Corbin. Our guy recovered pretty quickly on anti-inflammatories. We hope for the same for Corbin!

  15. Well......this is a bit of the good news! Here's hoping the meds help him out! We are not un-crossing our paws yet fur Corbin........we are waiting on the all okie-dokie update!!!!

Being dachshunds with a tendency to back issues.....and having a momma that paid big $$ for 3 prior dachsie back surgeries....we, too, have a ramp that leads up to our door PLUS no furniture jumpings allowed in our house. How NOT fun is that rule??? Butt, it does make the momma worry less about our backs....cuz the back pain is very terribles.

    Hugs......

  16. Corbin, stop jumpin' around so much! You need to be all pain free for the Valentine's Day Pawty! Ok, Big Guy!!

  20. Hello Corbin :o)

Meee heard about your sickies and sending you healing vibes.
Sorry you are in so much pain my friend :o( That is never fun...
Meee had that back problem awhile ago and my Mommy used the "Magic Wand" and Valor, an essential oil blend. My Dogtor calls it "chiropractor in a bottle". You can learn about the Magic Wand @ http://www.amega-amwand-healing.com/ Meee calls it Magic because it really works Magic on one's body.

    Hope you feel better soon,
    Neeko :o)

  21. Corbin is going to be taking downers? Oh man, poor guy. My Grandpa Angus took Valium during thunderstorms. It did make him kind of, well... sedate... for an airedale. I hope the magic pills do the trick.

  22. Well, I know it is not the same thing, but my mom threw her back out in October. She went on a course of steroids like pred AND serious pain medication that made her all loopy. Her back healed, the pain went away, and she slept really well for about a week.

I am so glad it not Pancreatitis! Tell Corbin that if he needs me to come over and keep him company on the couch, I'd be glad to!

    Feel better, Corbin!

    Your pal, Pip

  23. Is he drinking yet? Wonder if the physical movement of drinking hurt him. Does he have a raised stand for his food and water? If not, that might really help him.

So very glad it's not pancreatitis. Once you get it, it's a life long, life threatening disease. This sounds curable. Mama had a Dane once with a pinched nerve/disk issue in his back, and he healed just fine after treatment - once they figured out what it was. He wasn't allowed to run around or play with the other Danes for a few weeks, but that's a small price to pay to get well.

How is your ankle? We'll be keeping our paws crossed for both of you.

  24. I am very happy to hear you do not have pancreatitis. While on the Prednisone you'll wanna have some quick exits as it can make you have to weeeee frequently.

Stay calm, relax, take it easy and hopefully you will be back to normal very soon. Don't forget to give your humans lots of love because they have been very stressed worrying about their beloved boy.

  27. I can't imagine having to keep any of our dogs quiet for any length of time, so my thoughts and prayers are with you. We hope that he up and going in Corbin style in no time. Hope you are doing OK, as well. What a time to end up on crutches. Take care, you are all in our prayers. :)

  28. Lily had a similiar problem with her back and knee (her surgery). She wasn't in that much pain. The nuerologist looked at x-rays andsaw a pinched nerve going from back to knee. We have our paws crossed for you Corbin

  31. ok, this is NOT to make light of his pain but: The CRACKER on DOPE! oh yeah. me thinks you'll feel kind of lonely for a while. then you'll think: ah, some peace and quiet. then you'll think, i miss his crackery ways... and by that time, it's time to go off the dope.

i'm so glad it's not pancreatitis. the drinking thing tho: why wouldn't he drink if it's a pinched nerve?

MRI's? ya, we had one done on Juno. let me say, they are expensive but worth every single dime even if there's nothing wrong.

also: start thinking accupuncture, shen calmers (to calm his daily OD on crackery) and osteopath, which is a little hard to find in the states. osteopath work like chiropractors but for the ligaments and muscles. Gotta say, it does wonders for Juno. WONDERS. doesn't even look like they're doing anyting. they just touch them in the place the muscle is locked up and it releases without any pain. it's amazing.

much hugs to our brother in Crackery.

  34. I feel so much better with this diagnosis rather than the pancreatitis. Now that you have a better idea of what's wrong, I hope the treatment plan will work quickly and that he'll be feeling as good as new in no time!

Please do continue to keep us updated and I'll continue to keep him in my prayers.
