Day #5

Corbin's momma here again. No real changes today. He did sleep a little better last night, so I'm hoping the pain meds are kicking in. He's still not drinking on his own but we've been doing an okay job tricking him into drinking. Hopefully we'll find some answers tonight, our appt is at 7pm.

On another note, like Corbin's current situation isn't stressful enough, I fell this morning and have a bad ligament strain in my ankle. So I'm on crutches for the next 6+ days. The fun just never stops!

Thanks for everyone's support. It's been so helpful to read all the comments and emails. I've written up some notes and suggestions to bring with us tonight.

Keep those good vibes coming for my big fella!!!

Corbin's momma, Jenn

  21. When it rains, it always pours. Sorry to hear about your fall on top of everything else you're going through.

  22. Can you use Pedialyte for hydration? I know a long time ago we used it for a ferret. Sometimes the formulas change and what was pet friendly may not be now.

By vet recommendation we have added a bit of corn syrup to food to persuade eating maybe that would work with water too.

I also read that coconut water is just as good as Gatorade for replenishing hydration and it's all natural. My mom likes to drink it but I don't know if a doggie would drink it.

I hope you get some helpful information tonight.

Corbin my new friend....DRINK, Please :)

Maybe this will perk you up a bit...I've caught one of my sisters looking at your blog pictures;) Can you guess which one?

    Feel Better,

  27. I thought of Corbin many times today. I imagine that your appointment has happened by now. I hope that Corbin is feeling better. I think of you often.

And, darn, I'm so sorry about your ankle. When it rains, it pours.

  28. Paws crossed for you both! Come on Corbin, we know you can do it! You have to get better so you can take care of your mom's ankle.

    Your pal, Pip

  29. Oh jeez. Isn't it worse when you fall and hurt yourself on your own and can't blame it on the dogs? I sprained my foot (behind my toes) by tripping over snow fencing at an agility trial and was out of work for 6 weeks and had to wear an orthotic boot for months. I couldn't even say I hurt it doing agility or playing with the dogs, I did it by tripping over a fence that I shouldn't have been climbing over anyway. Oh well!

Fingers/paws are still crossed for Corbin, and now you too. I'm glad you were able to trick him into drinking a bit. I hope the pain meds are helping.

  30. I've been thinking about poor Corbin a lot and hoping that he'd start drinking and getting better. It's so hard when pets are in pain and there's nothing you can do to help them. Good luck and I hope you get some answers at the vet's appt.

Sorry to hear about the ankle. As KB said, when it rains, it pours!

  31. Corbin has been in our thoughts. I'm glad that he slept a little bit better last night, and I hope he improves very soon!!!!

  32. Maybe your ankle injury is the 'other shoe' and things will start getting better from now on. We are also thinking of Corbin frequently and praying for his full recovery. And now you, too.

  36. Hey Jenn! I wrote to my sister last night, and here's what she had to say... not sure if there's anything useful here, but you never know:

"I'm just wondering- are they unsure whether this could be just pancreatitis, or are concerned that it could be something else? An ultrasound could help if they are truly unsure of the cause of his abdominal pain, though it sounded like the clinical pathology was pointing to pancreatitis.

Acute pancreatitis can be VERY painful. It's important to keep him hydrated and comfortable while this is going on. I believe treatment is largely supportive and looking for underlying conditions, which could be something that he ate (something very fatty), could be immune mediated, or pancreatic duct obstruction, etc.

So aggressive fluid therapy, pain meds, anti-emetics, fasting (and eventual introduction of oral fluids) is probably the plan for now. If he's not eating for a prolonged period of time (>3-4 days), they might consider IV nutrition. Actually, I believe oral feeding is contraindicated in canine pancreatitis patients- they need the inflamed pancreas to settle down. Maybe they shouldn't be attempting to feed him for now? Also, our nutritionist was not a fan of feeding baby food- I don't quite remember why, but I think it doesn't actually have the low fat/low protein content that you want.

It sounds like they are working very closely with their veterinarian and supporting him. I hope he feels better soon!"
