What makes a Pit Bull

Last week I posted about how the momma got my DNA's read, and I have a question for you... do my DNA's make me any less of a Pit Bull?
A Boxastaffabullitahoundskybordaterrier?

What is a Pit Bull?  Is a Pit Bull made up of specific DNA's or is a Pit Bull a label put on all dogs with blocky heads, muscular bodies, smiley faces and waggy tails?
Muscles + Smiling Corbin = Pit Bull

Now, this is what I think.  I am a Pit Bull.  I've said it many times and I'll say it again and I'll always be proud to say it.  I am a Pit Bull.  Although only 10% of my DNA's came back with a typical "pit bull" breed (American Staffordshire Terrier), I am 100% a Pit Bull.

Why, you ask?  Because, I believe that a Pit Bull is based on looks.  A Pit Bull is a name thrown around to thousands, millions of dogs who are a mix of breeds.  In the BC times (Before Corbin), these dogs were called Mutts.... but now, they're called Pit Bulls.  What happened?

20lbs, labeled Pit Bull

70lbs, labeled Pit Bull

Fosters sister Brookie, 60lbs, labeled Pit Bull

40lbs, labeled Pit Bull

Foster sister, Eva, 30lbs, labeled Pit Bull

About 45lbs now, labeled Pit Bull

My Lexie Lou, momma to previous puppy.
40lbs, labeled Pit Bull

70lbs, labeled Pit Bull

100+ lbs, labeled Pit Bull

60lbs, labeled Pit Bull

50lbs, labeled Pit Bull

Now, none of these dogs have had their DNA's tested, but even if they did... would it make them less of a Pit Bull to society?  Is a "Pit Bull" a breed or a label?

  1. Awwww they are all very cute! I think the word Pit Bull is just a name, if they were tested some many not even be anywhere near a pit bull, I see labradore in a few! You can be whatever you want to be Corbin , if you want to be a pitty then be one BUT you are nothing but a furiend and a cutie to me!
Love and licks from your furiend Frank xxxxxxx

  2. Unfortunately, DNA means nothing in terms of the Pit Bull label. :-(

  3. Those are some really cute pit bulls. Makes me want to be one! If you is happy with being a pot bill, then it doesn't matter what the test says! Have a great Wednesday!

  4. Poor Lennox had a DNA test to prove he wasn't a pit bull and was still killed for looking like one. :( It's not right!

  5. We wear the label proudly and Ray's DNA doesn't really say Pit bull at all, only to me he is 100%...lovable!

  7. Like I said on your Facebark page last night, it IS very confusing. Even though "teck-nick-lee," we're not one of the pit bull breeds, we're pit bull "types." Meaning, we gots blocky heads and broad chests and super awesome muscles and short coats. Plus, we'd be labeled "pit bulls" by any place with BSL cuz most of those laws ban certain breeds or any doggies that have the "major physical characteristics" of them and, well, that would be you and me!

So, yup...I'd say we're pit bulls. And that's A-OK with me. Cuz maybe between you and me and all those other adorable pit bull-type doggies in your postie, we'll change the world!

  9. Badger and Mushroom are both non-DNA-tested pitbull-type rescue mutts. Regardless of their DNA, people tend to assume they're pitbulls, which affects things that we do. For example, we avoid areas with BSL, just in case. We keep them on their best behavior when we go out, or we leave them at home, just in case.

We've come across people who have insisted that they're too nice to be pitbulls, people who have been scared at the mere sight of them, people who have told us how much they love pitbulls, the whole gamut. Best of all, adopting Badger helped me work past my own prejudices about pitbulls and find the awesome online pitbull blogger community.

So... We know in our hearts that Badger and Mushroom are two special and unique dogs, regardless of their breed mixes. (In Badger's case, we think he's an alien.) We acknowledge that they may or may not be pitbull mixes based on DNA, but we realize that most people who come across them will assume they are pitbulls, so it is our responsibility to shape them into good representatives.

  10. It really doesn't matter - if someone thinks a dog looks like a pittie - sometimes that is all that is needed for them to either fear them.

I think a lot of shelters have workers that are pretty clueless about what breeds they have in their care. I've seen so many that have been labeled as the wrong breed - I mean, glaring errors. Just because someone works around dogs for years and years, doesn't necessarily mean they are educated about dogs.

I still say pit bulls are the sweetest dogs! I haven't met a pittie yet that I didn't like or was afraid of. I know they exist because bad owners exist, but I haven't experienced that yet. Thank you to all pittie owners that raise them up the right way and create ambassadors for the breed. Maybe someday you can say your dog is a pit bull without someone cringing in fear!

  11. With all the BSL going on, I would prefer you were called a Mutt. :-)

My Sampson has a big block head and he may have Pit Bull in him, I'm not sure. But if he did, I would never tell anyone. These BSL people are nuts.

Personally I think people tend to associate certain attributes to Pit Bulls which may or not be accurate.

  13. My Mommy #2 got in an argument the other day about the vices and virtues of Pit Bulls. Seems she does this a lot these days. She too once was skeptical about this group of dogs - until she got to know some. And what did she find? A bunch of big dogs with equally big hearts and big bunches of loyalty. The other person would not be swayed, can't win them all. But you won over Mommy #2 and that is a start.

  15. Does it matter, really? I love all pups, no matter what their DNA says!! You, Corbin, are a beautiful example of a 'Pit Bull'! And a wonderful foster brudder!

  16. Corbin you and the other beautiful pups we know who share some pit bull DNAs are absolutely 100% wonderful. This world has become a little too 'categorized'...what truly determines who 4 leggers and 2 leggers are is what is in their hearts not what is in their DNAs!! Hugs and Purrs to you and your look a likes!!

  24. It's a label....and condemning a dog based on a label is no different than racial profiling humans.

  25. I think that you should be proud to be a pit bull... I agreee that people just toss around that breed name way too much. But, you are an amazing spokesdog for all persecuted pit bulls. I am proud of you!

  30. I thought it was a breed, but after looking at your pix, I think now that it's a label. Some of those dogs look nothing like a pit bull.

No matter what you are, Corbin, me and my boys love you!
